100% cpu usage when online

When checking cpu usage in Task Manager/Performance, is it normal for the cpu usage to be 100% when running only IE? Is there a document somewhere that explains this? Thanks,
doug

Hi hodunwun,

Is it still at 100% when you close IE?

here is something that can help narrow down what other hardware might be causing the problem

Doc Zaius, Yes it is still at 100% when oline and not running IE.
I am sorry Kamikaze I did not fully understand the stuff in the link you sent.
Watching the performace graph in Task Monitor, I see that the cpu usage drops down to zero but then quickly goes bact to 100%. Just now for example I opened it and it showed 100% then while watching it, it went down to 8% the right back up to 100%. Any clues guys? and thanks for the help. Also maybe I should list the hardware. P 4 2.2, Asus 533p4t board, with 512 rambus. Running a v 92 modem with a local isp

Nope. That is not normal.

What's the URl you're talking about and what are your machine specs (OS, IE Version, etc.)? Any software or services running the background?

Christoph,
I don't know what uri means. Running xp pro, ntfs, IE 6.0.2800 with the big update installed. Norton Sys Works virus not monitoring internet but is monitoring email. I am not running mircorsoft automatic update. Icons in the tray are spam inpector, icq, clean sweep internet sweep, clean sweep smart sweep, webshots, paltalk, windows messenger, call wave, pop up stopper and a program that keeps the line active for downloading.
Lot of **** eh? Which to you think may be my problem?

Do you have a cheap Winmodem... they use processor time to function.

I got it. It was a program called kda that keeps the browser busy during downloads so the isp line stays open. Closed it down and cpu went down to 3 %. Cool. Good thing to remember.
I'll just use it when I download big files. Thanks for getting me thinking guys. Apreciate it.
