Dream Machine's first user error
Okie first here is my computer.
2.8 Ghz Pentium IV 533 FSB 2GB Rambus RAM 200GB 5200RPM Hard Drive GeForce4 Ti-4600 128MB SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Platinum naturally it worked like a dream after I built the thing. being the computer genious that I am... yeah right, no? Anyways, everything did run fine. Games played smoothly and there was no lag (DSL 768K). Yet somewhat recently there developed a problem. The problem is that the video for game intros and the games themselves pause for a split second and then play for two seconds. Repeat this till... whenever you decide watching your space fighter test its inertial dampners isn't fun anymore. Really though why is it doing this and how can I fix it? It is preventing me from playing Neverwinter Nights. So I reeeeally need to fix this. help please? I have Norton SystemWorks installed on the computer but I also shut all the automated selections on the program down. I shut down 'all' but the manditory programs in the task manager and even did the same in the msconfig startup menu. One thing I did notice that even after all that the CPU was still using 25-40% of its resources. Which to me is a sever cause of alarm in and of itself. with just nwn.exe running, the cpu shouldn't so much as cough in my direction. Again someone please help me out on this? thank you! P.S.-> oh and I use Windows XP: Professional as an operating system |

Hi Merenzine Gold,
Problem could be the 200GB 5200 RPM HDD...a 7200 RPM HDD would have been a better choice. Have you checked for viruses, spyware and trojans? Is the intro movie playing from the hard drive of from the CD-ROM/DVD/CD-RW drive? Have you defragged the hard drive? Is DMA enabled for all the drives? What do you mean by CPU resources and where are you getting that measurement from? Do you mean system resources or CPU usage? Cricket

Did this quit working after Norton System Works was installed?

this does the same thing to me on unreal championship 2003. my problem was the HARDWARE SOUND. when that is enabled the game out play for a few seconds then pause, play then pause, ect. try enabling SOFTWARE SOUND on your games and see if that makes a difference, it did for me.
creative should be releaseing a driver soon to fix this, so check their site often. |

I have updated and checked for spyware and no this started before Norton 'Systemworks' was installed. 'Norton AntiVirus' and Liveupdate came with the motherboard software (intel).
Both games are 'fully' installed so as far as I know they play from the hard drive. This is even effecting through game play though. I have defragged the hard drive twice with norton utilities and after I leave to go to school now, I'll set it up to do it again. ![]() What is DMA? I might know what it is but I doubt it is enabled cause I don't remember enabling anything with those initials. By CPU resources I mean but the CPU usage meter that is in the task manager's 'performance' window. Also to clear something up, for the first week the computer played games like Hitman 2 and Soldier of Fortune 2 without a problem at all. The computer is actually my dad's computer that I built for him. Yet after I moved it to his house it is having this problem. Here is a list of the programs I have installed. Office 2000 FP 2000 PSP 6 winrar Partition Magic 8.0 Thank you all for replying and I hope this helps narrow it down. |

oh and it will play video and audio files just fine in windows proper.
oh and I Western Digital doesn't offer a 7200 RPM 200 GB HD. and while I would prefer a 7200 RPM my dad wanted space over speed. Besides 5200 RPMs aren't that detremental. The other computer companies use that speed often enough. In any event, I don't think it is hardware because like I said before. Originally when I tested the machine before handing it over. It ran Hitman 2 and Soldier of Fortune 2 just fine. So obviously something happened to it software wise. I tried installing new drivers as well but to no avail Last edited by Merenzine Gold; 11-22-2002 at 01:47 PM. |
