I have 2 PCs I'm donating. One celeron 300 with Win95 (CD and License/book) and one Compaq with Win95 (restore CD and license/book). My problem arises with the Compaq.
I upgraded the Compaq with a PowerLeap K6-400 (and lots of other things). It ran just fine without ever reinstalling from the restore CD. Actually, I never used the restore CD. So, getting ready to donate the PC, I formatted the drive. The restore CD will not work because of the K6 that is installed. I can't put the old CPU back in because I gave that away right after I got the PowerLeap. Can I make a copy of the Win95 CD from my celeron and include that with the Compaq? It DOES have a license and software, just can't restore the software from the restore CD. This old Compaq is not a thing to throw away. It's taken everything I've thrown at it and just keeps working and working. I only stopped using it this past summer. I've even installed XP on it and it ran. Slowly of course. And XP even fixed the buttons which got broken in some update or other for Win95. However, I think they would like it to run faster with an older operating system. The memory is maxed at 96Meg. |

I don't think that would be legal. You would essentially be pirating a copy for use on another machine; not that different from copying the OS and giving it to a friend or whoever. AFAIK, you can only use that OS on one machine and are only allowed to make one backup copy for yourself. I don't think it would be legal, but maybe someone else will see this and know something different that I don't know.

Now that Compaq doesn't exist you can't really call them up. But you could try either contacting HP or microsoft in getting a windows 95 disk, they may charge you a nominal fee, its worth a shot anyways.

Well, I've decided to install Red Hat, give them the Red Hat CDs, the Win95 Compaq restore CD, book and license and let them know the restore CD won't help them. Then they can do whatever they want.
Called MS and they said yes, they would sell me a CD copy for this since I have registered the license and it's going with the original box, but they don't have Win95 anymore. Oh well. The kid that's supposed to get the Compaq has never had his own computer before, but hey, he's young and can learn. I'll make him a restore floppy and CD for Red Hat so all he has to do is boot and put in the CD if he messes it up too bad.
