Problems with XP PRO

I just recently upgraded to Windows XP Pro. Everything is working fine except the DVD ROM and Norton Antivirus 2003 Pro.

I had Windows 98 SE before upgrading and everything worked great. The problem with the DVD ROM is not that it doesn't work but when I insert a DVD it asks me what program to view in and I select ATI DVD (which comes with the Radeon Software, it also says compatible with XP). I can hear the sounds but no video. I think I need a decoder or something but I don't know where to get one. Anyone can help?

Norton Antivirus 2003 was working until I upgraded to XP. It's not enabled and I wanted to enable it but theres the folder C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\... not found. I looked and I can't find it so I think it was deleted. I tried uninstalling it but it won't let me becuase it can't find that folder. What can I do to make it work again or uninstalling it???

Thanks for your help!

Hi Krotos,

I think it's always better to do a clean install of XP rather than upgrade from a previous Windows version. Otherwise you can get all sorts of peculiar problems.

Did the ATI DVD player work perfectly with Win98SE? If so either the upgrade screwed it up or you need to download the newest version of an ATI DVD player from ATI.

Again, I think the upgrade affected NAV. A way round it might be to reinstall NAV and see if it works. I have heard of a few cases of people having problems with NAV 2003 and XP. I seem to remember, when they used NAV 2002 with XP, the problems stopped. However, I cannot find the source to confirm this.

So I would suggest backing up your data, partitioning and formatting the HD, and putting a nice clean install of XP. You can use your XP upgrade CD to do clean installs as well as an upgrade install.

Might be less hassle in the long run.

I would just reinstall both programs.
XP has moved the settings for each into the c:\documents and settings\username \...folder, and it's no longer in c:\program files\...where it was before, that's why you can't uninstall it.

That's what I was also thinking about. How do you do a clean install of XP?? I'm going to manually delete NAV and reinstall to see if it works. The ATI DVD player should work becuase it says it's compatible with XP. So I'll check to see if theres an update on the site.

So how would I be able to do a clean install of XP??

No, you don't need an install of XP, you need a reinstall of Norton, and your DVD software.

I tried to delete Norton Antivirus but it doesn't let me. I don't know how to get rid of that. I think it would be much better to reinstall XP in a clean PC.

Can anyone tell me how to install XP again but delete everything else??

You don't need to uninstall/remove the old programs, just reinstall them over top.
If you really insist on a clean install of XP, there are tons of threads on that topic already, try a search.
There's also a tutorial on that, you can find it from the front page here at PCMech.

The site wasn't much help. I guess what I will do is:

1. Go to BIOS and change boot sequence to floppy, Cdrom
2. Insert the windows 98 startup disk.
3. format C:
4. take out floppy
5. Insert Windows Xp disc
6. go to D: and setup
7. Windows XP starts installing

I have done this many times but with Win98 SE. I will just use the startup disk to format the drive. Let me know if this might work?

You dont need go through all that with the win98 boot up disk. Just put in the xp cd and start it up. The xp installation has a part that formats and partitions your disk in it already. Just select your partitions and delete them, then create your partition (if you want more than one you can make all of them now) and choose to install windows on your first partition. done.

Well fellows I tried that last night, see my other post. After windows reboots and says it's going to continue setup my monitor goes nuts and is unviewable. PC searches for drives or something because I can see the light come on for the floppy and the cdrw but then it just reboots.
