Unhappy nightmare messenger/hotmail problem

Hello there,

I am having an absolute nightmare of a problem with windows messenger and hotmail. I am running XP Professional with a Compaq P4 2ghz - though I'm pretty sure this isn't relevant as I have tried it from several different machines with exactly the same results.

I was in the middle of a conversation on microsoft messenger when I suddenely got bounced out. When I attempted to log back in, I got the following alarming message:

Signing in to .NET Messenger Service failed because the password is incorrect or the sign-in name does not exist. If you have forgotten your password, click Help in the main window, and then click Help Topics.

When I attempted to log into my hotmail account I received a message to similar effect. This happened first thing this morning, and I have tried periodically throughout the day to access both messenger and hotmail without success. Inexplicably on a couple of occasions I was able to access my hotmail account through the web interface, but this has not been sustained - and it is no longer working.

I would be extremely grateful for some assistance,

Matt.

Matt, you may consider that they are having network problems. Give it some time and if it is absolutely critical for you to access this account then give M$oft a call. Even huge services like this are prone to problems.

Cheers mate,

I think it may be sorted now. There were two versions of messenger running simultaneously - windows messenger (which comes installed with XP) and microsoft messenger (which installed as an update by mistake - I believe because the add-in was loaded).

I uninstalled messenger then reinstalled it from the m'soft site - now just one is running and it is working fine. I can only assume that the problem with the hotmail account was - like you say - a coincidental server problem.

Matt.
