Hello there,
I am having an absolute nightmare of a problem with windows messenger and hotmail. I am running XP Professional with a Compaq P4 2ghz - though I'm pretty sure this isn't relevant as I have tried it from several different machines with exactly the same results. I was in the middle of a conversation on microsoft messenger when I suddenely got bounced out. When I attempted to log back in, I got the following alarming message: Signing in to .NET Messenger Service failed because the password is incorrect or the sign-in name does not exist. If you have forgotten your password, click Help in the main window, and then click Help Topics. When I attempted to log into my hotmail account I received a message to similar effect. This happened first thing this morning, and I have tried periodically throughout the day to access both messenger and hotmail without success. Inexplicably on a couple of occasions I was able to access my hotmail account through the web interface, but this has not been sustained - and it is no longer working. I would be extremely grateful for some assistance, Matt. |

Matt, you may consider that they are having network problems. Give it some time and if it is absolutely critical for you to access this account then give M$oft a call. Even huge services like this are prone to problems.

Cheers mate,
I think it may be sorted now. There were two versions of messenger running simultaneously - windows messenger (which comes installed with XP) and microsoft messenger (which installed as an update by mistake - I believe because the add-in was loaded). I uninstalled messenger then reinstalled it from the m'soft site - now just one is running and it is working fine. I can only assume that the problem with the hotmail account was - like you say - a coincidental server problem. Matt. |
