Hello everyone,
On my old computer i have a ~7 GB hard drive and a ~3 GB hard drive. I wanted to take the 7 GB hard drive out and put linux on it and put it in my new computer. I was able to copy windows over to the 3 GB hard drive using Xcopy. Now when i try to boot up from the 3 GB hard drive i get an error message "invalid partition table". I used a boot disk from bootdisk.com to do "fdisk /mbr" and i also ran scandisk, but i havent been able to get it too work. Any suggestions? Thanks Alot. |

Hi rhdb52,
Did you set the 3GB to master, and set it's partition to Active? TwoRails |

I suspect that the invalid partition table message would have to come from the IPL rather than anywhere else.
I think that the BIOS wouldn't care? The OS cannot be loaded if the partition table is corrupt? Therefore, it must be the IPL in the MBR that is giving the message, and either the partition table, or the IPL itself, is corrupt it seems. Have to admit that I don't know whether FDISK / MBR re-writes the whole of the MBR, including IPL. Can you read the partition table from the boot disk? Perhaps try using Ranish Partition Manager or Smart Boot Manager (or similar) to see whether they can get it to boot. At least you will narrow down the possibilities! Also, check that the partition is an active primary partition (if you can read the partition table at all!) HTH, David. Gah! TwoRails jumped in there while I was typing! Must get beyond the one-fingered speed! Last edited by David_Jones; 11-28-2002 at 01:56 PM. |

Partition seems fine - Now to fix the OS
I think I would just re-install Windows at that point.
It seems to be working fine at that point, and is now a pure OS issue, which should be easily resolved with a re-install. HTH, David. Last edited by David_Jones; 11-29-2002 at 02:57 AM. |

When you get to the C:\ prompt, type: win
Does it go into windows? If so, you can do it three ways. 1. Add a line at the bottom of autoexec.bat that says: win 2. Edit "msdos.sys" to reflect the path and location of win.com 3. Reinstall Wndows. |
