I've been running XP for 11 months now without installing the 4 in 1 drivers.

I too have been running xp for a while without the 4 in 1's without any problems. The VIA website says the following:
Question:
Should I install the 4-in-1 drivers?

Answer:
All VIA chipset users should install the 4-in-1 drivers to improve performance, fix issues, and minimize any incompatibilities.

But who knows? Here is a little FAQ about the 4 in 1's. I plan on reinstalling windows with the 4 in1's this weekend so I will let you know.
