Boom I need help! Quickly!

Hi, I recently aquired a Compaq 5660 from one of my friends. It had a 12 gig hd in it, 128 Mb of ram, a dvd-rom, and windows 98 se. Before I got this I had a slower computer with 128 mb of ram, a cd burner, and a 30 gig hd. What I want to do is put the 30 gig hd in it, the burner in it, and the ram into it. I will keep the 12 gig hd in it as a secondary one. I did this, and then went to install Windows 95, not from the compaq cd, and it wouldn't recognize either of the two cd-rom drives. I did get it to format and partition the 30 gig hd. The only reason I want to put Win 95 on it right now is because I only have an update cd for Win 98se. Am I doing something wrong? Or is it doing this because I'm not using the Compaq software? I need help. When I get done I want to have the 256 mb of ram in it, the 30 and 12 gig hd's, the dvd-rom and burner, and have it running Win 98se and maybe dual-boot it with Win 2k. Thanks for your help. ~Jeff

Did you get win95 to install? Any idea which version it is A,B,C?

Might need to create a 2 gig partition to get win95 to install.

I have the partitions already made. I think what my problem may be, not sure yet, but my boot disk may be junk. I dont think it is loading the drivers for the cd-roms. I will check that when I get back home. I am hunting right now. Thanks ~Jeff

I think you are being bitten by the proprietary bug.

set it to boot to the cd in the bios and just boot to the 98cd and it will ask to look at the win95 disks..

if it wont boot to the cd that way try using a win98 boot disk and boot with cd support and just type in setup and the cd prompt.

is the cd drive being rec in the bios, are the jumpers and cables correct?

The hardware setup of brand name computers are rather proprietary in nature. They are designed so that Compaq parts would more or less need Compaq service to upgrade them.
Sort of like you need 'Jaguar' parts for your Jaguar, though it is a car and you need to take it to a 'Jaguar' mechanic to get it fixed. This is especially so on older IBM's, Gateways, Compaqs, Dells, etc...

Thumbs up Thanks!!

Hi, thanks for all of your help! I finally figured out what it was, my boot disk was a pos. It didn't load drivers for the cd-roms. Now I am running very smoothly!
