I've seen Word behave that way with a macro virus that infects the normal.dot In Office 95 and 97 you could delete it and try to open it. It will rebuild itself and you'll just have to set your preferences again. I don't know what version you're running or if you can do that with later versions as I moved away from applications support. But if it is a word macro virus, you need to get that cleaned to keep it from happening again. Only thing hitting me off the top of my head...

. . . and if you don't have an AntiVirus installed yet, in the meantime you can visit http://www.trendmicro.com and try their free online scanner "HouseCall": it works pretty well and is very up-to-date. Good luck! - and post again if no viruses are found.

[Hmm... if no viruses are found, seems like some of the newer versions of Word (2000, XP) have "repair installation" options in the System Information program in the System Tools folder. . . Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information . . . and look either in the "Tools" menu or under "Software Environment" or "Office" for a Word listing that has a repair option. (I don't have an Office 2000 or Office Xp system with me right now - they're about 3,000 miles away at the moment). . . again, good luck]

joyro - did you try the virus scan yet?

. . . Gary

p.s. - I'll be checking back in this thread, rather than the older thread ("MS Word problems" only difference is the capitals)
