Hi MARKBLACK,

Are those devices powered up when you turn on your computer?

Parallel or USB?

Hi MARKBLACK,

Are they parallel or USB?

What happens if you power up the computer with those devices turned off?

the scanner and printer are linked via a parallel lead from the tower to the scanner another parallel lead from the scanner to the printer.

both the scanner and print work fine.

windows xp seems to be looking for the scanner

We have something like this on a system at work with a modem. What we finally did was let the system install new (or stupid) stuff for it's "new" device once. Then go into control panel, system, device manager. Find the extra device which had either ? or ! on it, and click the "disable in this configuration" check box of the properties. It just sits there and windows stopped trying to install on every boot.

This doesn't fix the problem, but it stops the install each time you boot.

I don't know if this will help you or not.

When you're at it, you might as well check in the BIOS that the Parallel port is set to ECP; although the EPP+ECP setting seems to work well for most peripherals.

I remember when I got the scanner it mention that it supports epp - I had to change this on the other machine because eveytime I used the printer I had to reboot the machine.

The problems back - I thought I had sorted it out - but the scanner driver had been uninstalled (don't ask how).

I have tried everything I can think of its doing my head in.

Why don't you disconnect both devices and uninstall them from Device Manager. Also remove any software from Add/Remove Programs.

Then connect the scanner directly to the Parallel port, reinstall the Scanner drivers and see if you can get it working on it's own.

What Scanner is it? Have you checked the MS site to see if it's XP compatible? Any updated XP drivers at the manufacturer's Web Site.

Once the Scanner is up and running then do the same with the Printer.

Once both have been tried and tested, then finally, try joining them together and see if they can work together in series.

For some strange reason the scanner software won't delete from Add/Remove
