Installing Windows on a ThinkPad i Series 1410

My dad has been having some trouble with the laptop lately, due to the limitations of windows 98 FE. He is unable to connect to the new switch at his school. The technicians their have tried to fix it through various ways, even going as far as getting him to buy a new network card but nothing seemed to work.

We've come to the conclusion that Windows 98 SE will have to be installed. Now for some stupid reason -- this is Microsoft after all -- it isn't possible for us to just plop SE over top of FE... that would be much to easy. As far as I can see we'll have to reformat his hdd and start over from scratch. Now from what I understand we can't just go about this as we usually would with a desktop. Apparently there is some sort of funky little partition that has the BIOS on it?

I've had a look at IBMs site but I haven't been having much luck. What do I have to do differently from the usual desktop procedure? He's got 98 FE on it with a 2 gig partition for C: and a 1 gig partition for D: We've backup up all the data using our home network and my burner.

Hello;
What leads you to believe you can not just do an upgrade?
I got my 98SE cdrom direct form the Microsoft website for around 20 dollars and that is just what it is for is to go from 98FE to SE. Your Partition thing should not matter as you are only concerned with the main partition C: that has the OS on it. Your BIOS actually resides on a chip on your mainboard, so that other partition is probably just another partition. Perhaps you only have the Win98SE full version disk, may be worth seeing if the second edition updated disk is still available!
Here it is for 13 dollars:

This disk is only good if you currently have 98FE and it should do the trick to get you updated to SE.
