Wrong bailey. XP has "compatibility mode".
When you go to run the program, right click on it's shortcut and select Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab, and put a tick in the box. Select run in compatibility mode for Win95 (which did have true DOS support) and all should be well.

Some DOS games will not work in XP Compatiblity mode or with the hardware in modern systems. You can only try and see.

This site offers a very good guide to setting up DOS games with XP

http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php

Pay particular attention to the link to VDM soundblaster emulator.
You might need it.

If you're a DOS-game enthusiast, then you might like to think about setting up a dual-boot system and running Win98 (or Win98SE) AND XP. The true DOS environment of WinSE would give you a better chance of getting them to run.

Also, many of my friends have bought older PCs for peanuts (486s and early Pentiums) and use them for their DOS games. I bought an old P90 with the original hardware and that runs my DOS games brilliantly.

Good point mike. I have (gasp!) a Hewlett Packard P75 (model Spectria 300CDQ) running Win95 with 64 meg and it's ONLY used for DOS games/junk.

Expect them to run slower.
