95 boots to command prompt

Hi guys,

Looking at an old P166, after flashing up the Win95 logo for a split second, it boots to a command prompt. Going into the windows dir and typing win doesn't do anything(is this supported under win95?).

I've tried a couple of things in a bit of a flurry(from a bootable"sys c:" and "fdisk/mbr"). No joy.

Any ideas??

Cheers.

Try renaming the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files and then see if it will boot.

Hold down the Shift key when booting (or Ctrl) and see if it boots into Safe Mode and gives you any messages.

If all else fails, reinstall Win95 over the top of itself. That should replace any missing system files and your data should remain intact.

You can get a bootdisk with CD-Rom support here

www.bootdisk.com

Before you do that, might be worthwhile to boot with the bootdisk, change to C: and do a DIR, to see if it lists all the directories on C:
