xp & 1394

I'm having trouble formatting an external firewire drive with win xp. The format runs through the full cycle, but finishes with a dialog box saying that either: the format was not completed successfully, or the disk cannot be formatted. I know that the disk, the card, the cables work because I passed them on to a friend (using win 2k) who was able to format & write to the drive. When I tried to read the drive after he formatted, my computer crashed. I've tried 2 external drives, and 2 1394 cards. Same thing happens. The latest suggestion is to reformat C: and start over, assuming that I have some OS issue. Any ideas out there?
