Audio problem

Problem: Most videos and mp3's that I download now either have no sound or the sound is very distorted. But, the windows login music file....any type of prompt to verify cancelation......and UT2003 are all able to produce quality sound.

I started experiencing this problem about 2 months ago and have just been too lazy to find detailed info about this. But, to me it seemed that this started happening right after I was fooling around in UT2003's settings and changed the sound to safe mode in the game(its not on safe mode anymore).

Could I have done some serious damage somehow by changing the settings to safe mode?

And btw all the mp3's that sound distorted on my computer, sounds great when I burn them to a CD.

If updating your drivers didn't help (or if you'd rather not try that), it's likely a software setting rather than a driver issue, since your .wav and .midi sounds are playing just fine. Do the mp3's play with the same program after burning them to a CD as when playing them from your hard drive? Which program is it? (Media Player, Real One/Player, WinAmp)? There are quality settings in each that can affect the static/stuttering quality of sound issues.

Are you using onboard sound, or a PCI card?

And check in on the Audio tab in the MultiMedia applet in Control Panel to make sure the right device is set for playback.

Not sure what UT2003 does to sound settings (I don't have that software) - but perhaps a tech with that one will post an answer.

Best of luck,
. . . Gary

OK, well after formatting the sound is still sucky.

I have onboard sound with latest drivers.

I think the onboard sound is just screwed up, so I am thinking about buying a pci sound card.

How does the VOYETRA TURTLE BEACH SANTA CRUZ - OEM sound for $60?(@newsgg)

Hi Colb_Dog,

That's a great card, I highly recommend it. In fact, Amazon has the retail version on sale for $55 now.
