copying win98 to hd
when you copy the windows folder from the installation disc to the hard drive (C:\Win98), what should you copy, just the Win98 folder?
also, I installed win98 first edition and then the second edition updates cd. Is there anything on the updates cd that I need to copy as well? |

Hi Dan,
Yes, you would just copy over the Win98 folder from the CD to the hard drive. I'm not sure what you need from the Win98SE update CD as I've never seen one. Cricket

To follow up on Cricket's post (Hi Cricket) - since you've upgraded, copy the \Win98 folder from the Win98 2nd Ed. disk. It has a few extras (such as Internet Connection Sharing) and newer file versions than the Win98 original disks. A favorite place for putting the files is in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs
Haven't actually tried this myself much, I like having the installation files on that read-only CD (as far away from viruses as possible) ![]() . . . Gary |

Thanks Cricket and Gary
I never considered the issue with virus infection (good point)... Here's what I did (I think this will work ok): I copied the win98 folder from the original installation cd. Then I tried to copy the contents of the upgrade to the same folder, got the message about "if the contents is the same it will be replaced....." and chose "yes to all" and let it do it's thing... I figured this way if there is anything that is needed from the first disc it would remain, otherwise everythig else would be replaced. By putting everything in a folder named Win98, will a new program or hardware installation read these files instead of asking for the cd, or do I have to do something else?? |

Hi Dan
Seems like you're all set. If you want programs to look for your installation files on the hard drive first, there's a registry value you can change to do that: it's called "SourcePath", and you just change it to the location where you copied the Win98 install files. The Registry key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Setup\SourcePath Your current value probably reads "D:\Win98" You would change it to something like "C:\Windows\Options\Cabs" - or wherever you put the files. Best of luck, . . . Gary |
