old pentium 233

Has the desktop with green dots instead of solid green on Win98. Only available colors under display properties are 16 and 2. How can I fix it to be solid green on the desktop? Thanks.

Hi Charles,

Sounds like the video card drivers aren't installed or are corrupted.

Thanks for the tip. There aren't any yellow dots in "view devices by connection" under "device manager" which tells me video is working ok. This is an old motherboard and whatever drivers were installed Win98SE put them there. Perhaps I can delete video drivers and let Win98 install them again?

The only other thing I can think of is:

Is this video card or onboard video not enough for Win98SE and maybe I have to install Win95 again? Thanks.

Win98 would probably just install the Standard VGA driver again (which is what is giving you the 16-color display). If you know the make/model of video card/onboard video - post it and we'll find some drivers for you. Or if you want to search for them yourself, you'd look at manufacturer's websites (video card maker, or motherboard maker - for the onboard video). If it's Win95 vintage, http://www.driversguide.com can be of help when old manufacturers are no longer in business.

Best of luck

Yes, but as GaryRouth mentioned it could be using the Standard VGA drivers instead of the drivers specific to that video card. Is the video card identified by make and model? Or does it just say Standard VGA adapter?

I think any video card capable of working with Win95 will probably be able to work with Win98 with the correct video drivers installed.

I think Gary and Cricket are right, the drivers aren't installed. When I reinstalled Win95 on my machine, the Standard VGA 16-color driver was all it installed for me. It didn't install any SVGA drivers automatically. I had to go to the video card manufacturer's website to get the SVGA drivers, then all was fine.
