I just purchased a new, larger hard drive (WD 120GB 8MB Cache) planning to upgrade my PC's existing drive.
HOWEVER... XP Pro on my system apparently doesn't like to be copied onto a new HDD. I was hoping to simply do a drive-to-drive copy from my old drive (80GB IBM Deskstar) to the new one (the WD 120GB) uysing WD's supplied tools. I was able to do the format & copy of all my data from the old drive to the new, and the new drive started to boot XP Pro, but then froze partway through the boot. By going into safe mode, I can tell that XP Pro is freezing at the same point every attempt to boot: When it tries to load the mup.sys driver. Has anyone attempted a HDD upgrade on XP, and if so, have you had any issues or do you have any hints? Thanks, apexchaser |

Norton Ghost will work. I've never had any luck with the tools provided on the diskette, seems they only work in 16 bit mode, which means that all filenames are truncated to DOS 8.3 configuration, and pathnames can be shortened as well.
This results in invalid filenames, and/or path locations. I have had some luck by using fdisk/format on the new drive, installing it as slave then use Explorer to copy everything to the new drive, but that's not as easy as it sounds, as some files just won't go. |

Thanks!
Appreciate the tip, Jim. I'll give it a shot (although it means buying Ghost... which I'm not too thrilled about... grumble grumble)
Thanks again, Felipe. Any other suggestions out there before I go buy software?
