Printer setup in Windows XP
I setup two computers today replacing two old ones with Win95.
They were side by side sharing a printer. The win 95 setup had computer 1 with the printer on LPT1 with a cable from the NIC to the NIC on computer # 2. I hooked it up the same way, but I can not get # 2 to print. How do I configure #2 so they can share the printer like before? The XP wizard has additions for LPT!, 2, 3 and Com 1,2,3,4 and a place to " add port ". I don't know what setting to put in . Any ideas? Thanks |

You have to add a network printer on PC2. Also have to make sure file and printer sharing is installed in the PC with the printer and the printer is shared, under the properties of that printer. You have to install the drivers for the shared printer on the other PC too and just go to ControlPanel>Printers>add printer, should get a box asking what type, tell it a network printer and as long as it can find it on the other PC, you should have no trouble getting thru the driver installation.

Thanks for the reply KT:
I did load drivers on both computers, and the printers were recognized. I printed test page on # 1 but on #2 they stayed in the que. I know I specified # 2 as a network printer and specified shared. I may not have specified network and shared on # 1, since it worked when I printed the test page. If I missed that on #1 would that deny # 2 printing? I will check that tomorrow when I return. Roy |

No ROY you won't specify network printer on PC1, but just enable that printer to be shared. I didn't realize how far you actually were. Sounds like PC2 found and did install the network printer, but for some reason it just isn't printing. Go onto your printer properties on PC2 and there will be something there. What type of printer?? On my Lexmark I had to go into printer options from the Lexmark control program and disable printer to PC communications even though it seemed to find it and load the drivers fine. Sounds like your just where I was, printer is recognized and drivers installed, So there is just something either in the printers control program or right click the printer and properties on PC2. If it's just staying in que and you get no error message when you try to print then you are close.

Thanks KT-solved the problem today. On # 2 I had chosen " local printer" instead of network. That's what the Wizrd recommended.
After trying everything else, I selected that, and it worked. The only way I had shared printers before was with an A-B switch. Then I did not have to think as much. Thanks for the help. |
