Ok if you read my other thread, I decided to install 98 Instead of XP becuase of all the problems I was having. I figured that this would show me that I had no hardware problems. So 98 runs fine. So i deleted windows in DOS and ran the XP installation (yes it can be done that way) I got past the first 2 sections. then it said "Starting Windows XP" the computer acts like it is going to restart and finish installing but the screen just turns black and the comp freezes....any ideas anyone?
heres the setup: bare bones, Athlon 1.33 ghz, 256 megs of ram, 40 gig 7200 hard drive, and a geforce 4 4200.... |

Is all of the hardware on the XP HCL? Do you have another stick of ram to use? What mobo are you using? Did you format the HDD with Fdisk and during the format section of the XP install did you choose to leave the current format? Is the HDD formatted with FAT32 or NTFS? Just because 98 installed does not mean that the hardware is compatible with XP. XP has been known to be very touchy with cheep ram in which 98/ME will run fine but XP won’t.

If you're running generic RAM, then first thing I would do is get a stick of quality RAM and Jimmie pointed out.
