fatal exception 0E 016F:BFF9DFFF

I just finished putting a new computer intel celeron computer together for my aunt. Loaded all the software she had including windows 98 SE, updated it and I not positive but I believe when I installed her IBM scanner I received this error message.

"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 016F:BFF9DFFF"

Once we rebooted it appears to have gone away, but these things have a way of coming back to haunt you and my aunt isn't the most computer literate person and I would like to make sure she has trouble free computing.

Anyone know exactly what this fatal exception error is and if there is a fix? I have been searching for a while.

Thank you.

Hi Idodman

. . . and welcome to PC Mechanic.

As you probably noticed while you were searching, a fair number of things can cause fatal exception errors. If the machine is there with you, and it receives such an error again, see if there's any more detail you can post - sometimes the error message will indicate what module or program is involved, which helps pinpoint the trouble. When the errors are random, it often points to trouble with the system memory (RAM).

Here is a link that might help.

It may have just been a problem the installer program had - time will tell. If it's trouble with the scanner conflicting with something, that will show up when she tries to scan.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

[p.s. . . . you can also ask your aunt to write down any error messages she gets and forward them to you]

Thank you.

Good advise and I can happily say that I have been to the site you suggested and have asked my aunt to write it all down for me if it happens again.

I certainly hope it's not RAM since the computer is new, on the other hand it's still under warranty.

My feeling is it was just the installer but as you say time will tell.
