Smile Error in exe file?

Appreciate some assistance.

Have a PC, that when re-started in MS-DOS mode shows the following at the top of the black screen:

C:\>C:\WINDOWS\CWDINIT.EXE /A
Error in EXE file

Did a search in the Registry for anything with CWDINIT.exe, but came up blank.

Config.sys and Autoexec.bat are also empty.

Any ideas on how to get rid of this entry?

Is pc booting up ok and everything works? That's an audio driver. You can remove it (the error message) or try below steps if pc hanging on boot. Depends on whether audio is working:

In the CONFIG.SYS file, find the DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\CWDINIT.EXE /A entry. The "/A" is responsible for the hang.

In this case, start Windows 98 in Safe Mode, edit CONFIG.SYS, delete "/A" from the line or REM the line, and restart the computer. Uninstall and reinstall the audio driver on your computer.

After this the REM can removed or insert the parameter "/A" in the line "DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\CWDINIT.EXE /A".

Hi all

To follow up on Sarge's post: FZWG - you mention that your config.sys and autoexec.bat are empty. But the "config.sys"-type file that rebooting in MS-DOS mode uses is different. It's "config.dos". If you are using onboard Crystal sound, it probably looks something like:

DOS=SINGLE
DOS=HIGH,UMB
Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys
Device=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
device=C:\WINDOWS\cwdinit.exe /A

. . . you can try Sarge's edit (removing the /A) from there & see what happens.

Smile

Thanks for the reply.

Config.sys is empty.

Went to dosstart.bat and renamed it dosstart.old. Entry finally went away.

Forgot about dosstart.bat (kind like spaghetti, those old startup files). Glad your memory was better than mine. [It's been a while since I looked at those files]

Nice work

You may have forgotten about dosstart.bat. Hey, that's OK! I didn't know it even existed!!

It was another person's suggestion. Can't take the credit.

It worked though. So far, so good.
