Help me load 4 OS's
I need to know the best way to load these four OS’s. Win98, ME, Win2K, and most likely Red hat. I have read that Win ME has to be on C, and that win98 will boot off of any partition as long as the primary is active. So would I be wrong in starting with ME on C, then 98 on D, win2K on F, and letting Red Hat do its thing with the left over drive space. If so, how will ME and 98 boot because I am not sure if ME has a boot loader. Once I load win2k I am not worried its just before 2K is loaded that concerns me. Any help would be appreciated.

I cannot really help you on that one, but I'm curious... why do you need 4 OS's?

edrod,
Start with the oldest Windows OS first, then install red hat, you will see Linux's (LILO or Grub) boot loader first, to select windows or Linux, then you will see W2k's boot loader for the microsoft OS's. I believe however that you can just use LILO, and list all your windows OS's and boot them from there, but I'm still relativley new to linux. P.S. I would leave ME in the desk drawer, and not even install it. my .02¢ Last edited by mikeL; 12-07-2002 at 07:19 AM. |

When you install WINME first, and then Windows 98, Windows 98 will take over the boot record, and you won't be able to duel boot.
That is why you want to install Windows 98 first, and then so on. There was a tutorial on pcmech forums on what to do when you install windows me, xp first and then windows 98. Look back in the forums for it. Save the time and hassle and install windows 98 on a primary partition first. |

Guys,
This is a spare PC and I just want to see if I can do it. Once I get these loaded I just might wipe the drive. I do not plan on using the multi-boot system for anything but testing. Edrod13 |

If I install win 98 first, win ME immediatley starts to update the registry like If I wanted to upgrade from 98 and not a clean install on a seperate drive. I think it does this because ME has not loader. I think ME will have to be first otherwise it will think I want to upgrade 98.
There are other boot loaders out there that will allow me and win98 to dual boot, its just that what happens when I introduce win 2k and maybe linux. Edrod13 |

Hi edrod13
You've got more time on your hands than I do. Sounds like fun. The easiest way would be to use System Commander, but that costs $$. David Risley's multi-boot article mentions the bootloader XOSL. But if you're going to be using just one disk, I think you might have to go with System Commander, to get around the problem that Win98 and WinME have - only one partition can be active (not sure if XOSL can help with that or not). . . . All I can say is: ME bad!
...and install the oldest O/S first and work your way up to the newest. It's also a very good idea to have each O/S on a seperate partition.

I have loaded ME various times without any problems but I can't start with the oldes OS first because I think ME requires installation on drive C:\. I could start with 98 first but I think I would have to put it on like D: or E:. Well I haven't started yet and I will do some more research. TIA

Because of the way ME takes over things, the only way I know it can be done, is with two hard drives.
Put only 1 in the computer, set it as C, fdisk, make active, format, install ME. Take the drive out. Put in the other drive, set as C, fdisk, make active, format, install 98. Put both drives in, with 98 as C, ME as D, and whatever partitions after that. Install either 2k/NT/XP, or Linux. This depends on what boot loader you want to use, Windows one, or Lilo/Grub. If you want Lilo, install Linux, last. If you want the Windows loader, install XP last. Any other operating systems you load after that will; a) have to be manually added to boot.ini, or b) run XP repair to modify the boot.ini for you |

Ok sounds good. Once I put both drives back in will I have to edit the boot.ini for 98 & ME SO I can boot to any OS. I have been reading about XOSL boot loader. It has the ability to hide partitions from Fdisk so I could use one drive, hide the active partition and then go into fdisk and create another. Does this sound like it could be done. I only have one drive so thats why I was wondering if this would work. TIA
