Eliminating a Dual Boot ?
Currently running 2 IBM HDs that dual boot 98se & XP. I am ready to stop using the 98 drive, as I need it for storage and do not use 98 anymore.
The problem is that the dual boot is on the drive hosting 98. I have searched the XP disc and see nothing about transferring from dual boot to single XP boot. However, when I put the XP disc in and start the install process it sees XP installed and asks if I want to upgrade. Did not try this because I do not want to wipeout current XP settings. Has anyone had experience with this before and is the above the way to move to a single HD-XP boot? |

this works in W2k pro and i`m certain it will work in XP.
boot to XP then open control panel\system\advanced\start up and recovery. under system startup select Win XP as default and uncheck the box to show the available starting systems during boot up. it should then only boot to XP and not show the MS boot manager. you should then be able to format the W98 partition using disk Win XP disk management in administrative tools. at one time i had a dual boot W98\Win XP. i wanted to install W 2k Pro only and to save time i formatted the XP drive NTFS (using Partition Magic) and simply ran the W2k install from W98. i chose to format the C: drive as NTFS and clean install the W2k Pro but still ended up with the boot.ini file which indicated a multi boot system, W98\Win XP\W2k Pro (not to mention a few other things i had to clean up, next time i`ll do raw formats before before a clean install) doing the above mentioned solved the problem and the system boots nicely. |

Boot up into DOS, and format your WIN98SE drive. If you hav two drives, remove the partition from the win98SE drive. Then run winxp setup and click on REPAIR. WINXP will repair the boot record, you will have WINXP primary, and you will no longer have a duel boot menu.
P.S- Not sure if you need to remove the partition even if you have on drive with two partitions. I think choosing the repair option in winxp setup will also fix the partitions. |
