Here's the problem i am facing. I recieve this message after reboot and after the splash screen "The procedure entry point _resetstkoflw could not be located in dynamic link library msvcrt.dll" It pops up twice once with services.exe and the second lsass.exe in the title bar. I am running WinXP Home Edition on an HP laptop the HD is NFTS partitioned. The factory disk only has the option Of reinstall...or a diagnostic . Both does me no good. So i can't replace the .exe files The only boot disk i have is FAT32 so i can't get through to the c:\ prompt in dos to copy and paste the files. If you can give me some help I would appreciate it. As you can tell i can't format the HD I have very important docs on it.
Thanks. Chad Ryan |

OK Chad, the problem you have here I guess is that msvcrt.dll has been replaced either by you or by a third party prog. This file is allowed to be changed and isn't protected by Windows (unlike many other system files)
You'll need to get yourself a copy of msvcrt.dll from your CDROM If you need help with this let us know, what kind of system is it (i.e. what kind of CD was supplied) ? Jim |

thank you for reply
I have Windows XP Home Edition The CD is a HP Factory disk I have Windos XP Professional Running On my other desktops I could copy this file using the msdos prompt but I don't know how or where to get a NTFS boot disk. The problem is I use an old Windows 98 Start UP Disk and it won't let me access my hard drive. I can access DVD-rom drive and floppy just no c:\ The diagnostics are loaded onto c:\ and no other drives are valid. If you need more info let me know I understood the part of the msvcrt.dll and copying it to the hard drive but as you can see I can't get past NTFS. Thanks for the reply |

E-Mailed it to you
CHAD;
Do you have winXp CD, from your other PC's?? it might be worth a try to boot with one of them and use the file extraction feature. I could e-mail you the file but not sure if that would help you get it on to your LAPTOP. Does the laptop come up ?? Can you get safe mode on the laptop if not booting fully to windows?? I sent it via e-mail to you, found it 15 different places on mine. Got it from: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msvcrt.dll

Thanks for the reply. With this error I can't pull anything up. Safe mode won't boot...well it will but the only thing it does is have a black screen. There is no desktop but it shows the Windows XP Home Build and the words Safe Mode where it normally is. As you can see my only option is to get into the c: prompt which I can't do because FAT32 does not like NTFS. I am not familiar with NTFS so I have no idea how to access my c: prompt. I figure once I access it (which is where the hard drive is) I can replace that .dll through DOS. That is the only way I see of it. The funny part is I can access the DVD-ROM and floppy with DOS. My Windows XP disk but it is not bootable so I have no way of accessing the Recovery Consule which Microsoft talks about. If anyone knows how to access the c: prompt with freeware I would appreciate it. If not I guess I'll spend some $$$
Thanks for replies Chad |

Why not just save all your documents and do a re-install with the HP recovery disc? Won't this work?

What WinXp disk do you have?? I thought they were all bootable. I just upgraded to Xp pro and booted from the CD. If you boot from Cd then you shouldbe able to put that file on floppy and put it where you need it to be.

If i could save everything I would but I have no way of doing that. I can't access my hard drive. The discs I have are copies. I have no idea where my originals are. They are not bootable i know that unless I am doing something wrong if you could let me know what folders and files are at the top of the disk (the first ones you see since there is not many of them or any idea maybe I could check and see. The copies have never been bootable. Unless I am mistaken. If you know of a way to access C I can replace the file. Or any other ideas. Basically looking for an NTSF bootable disk.
Thanks for replies. Chad Ryan |

Basically your winxp cd is your ntfs bootable disk:
The recovery console is like DOS for winxp and ntfs installs! I've never looked or needed to but have seen a site mentioned here: www.bootdisk.com Maybe you'll find what you need there! |

OK looks like you need to shove your XP CD in to boot from it (change the boot order in the BIOS so that the first bootable disk is the CDROM drive)
Then you need to use the recovery console as per this website http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBL/tip5600/rh5606.htm and this website http://www.theeldergeek.com/recovery_console.htm HTH, Thanks, Jim |
