Rundll errors

I got my friends machine back up and running but now when it boots I get a rundll error message. Mine had a similar message just before it had a bad crash. Both acted like it is a really bad virus but freshly updated virus software finds nothing. Mine seemed to happen right after a Windows update that had two IE6 security updates.
The message says:
Rundll 32 has caused an error in Deskcp16.dll
Rundll will now close
If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer
I have restarted many times, ran scandisk and Norton Windoctor and it is still there. Any ideas on how to fix and save what is on the hard drive?

Had the same problem with new build and Windows ME..ended up reformating, loading and running IE 5.5...works fine now and don't bother with IE 6. don't know whether this helps much or not..good luck

When you swapped the new motherboard and cpu in, did you try the "ENUM Trick"? [It's listed here at PC Mechanic in the "Tips and Tricks" section]. You can still try it, even though you've had the box running for a day already. Sounds like the video driver isn't happy about the QuickRes display utility. If you're stuck in Standard VGA, you'll need to find a video driver, or perhaps reinstall the one you have already. If the new board has onboard video, and you're not using it, you'll need to disable it (sometimes a jumper, sometimes a bios setting, sometimes both).

And then there's the issue of motherboard AGP drivers & chipset drivers when swapping motherboards, the ENUM key can help with that.

Best of luck

Thanks Gary, I'll give it a try. I am using an old TNT2 card I had because his Geforce 2 card has an external box that it uses. I told him to bring it without the card or box. I figured the unified drivers would work with either one, both being Nvidia. Reloading drivers isn't that hard to do anyway. It don't have the driver installed for my monitor either. His is a Viewsonic flat panel that I sold him because I didn't like it. I think it still has some software in there too for his old video card, a Number Nine Savage 4.
Also Truckman, I'm gonna try to get rid of IE6. I saw the 5.5 setup files still on it but can't find the IE6 uninstaller and it's not listed in add/remove.
