Can't get sound working with XP

Ok, I just about have it now. Unfortunately, I can't get my audio drivers to work. I have an Asus k7v with onboard sound (VIA AC'97 Audio Controller). From the looks of it, everything installed properly, but when I check the status of the audio controller it says "Drive is enabled but not funtioning properly". I have downloaded whatever drivers I've been able to find for this sound card, but none of them work and I revert to the one that Windows XP chose. Anyone have any ideas? The only other thing that I can think of is that during the installation I had to skip a file called "swenum.sys", but I think that has something to do with directx.

I have :
Athlon 750
Windows xp pro
256k ram
K7V Mobo

TorontoKid :
Did you check control Panel/ Sounds & Audio Devices and make sure there isn't a check mark on "mute"? Then go into "Advanced" and make sure all are un-checked. Then go into Audio and make sure the default device enabled is your sound card. Then you can go into the "Hardware" tab and use the troubleshooter. If all else fails you may have to re-install your drivers.

yes, I sure did. No luck. I think that maybe the drivers I have don't work, but I can't find anything different

I reinstalled win98 just to make sure my hardware was working fine and it was, so I reinstalled winxp. I went to the mS site and downloaded and installed service pack 1, but still it wouldn't make my sound work. Windows recognizes it because it install the proper driver for Via AC'97 Sound Controller, it just doesn't work or responde. Does anyone think that I should buy a plug and play sound card to see if my onboard sound is the problem?
