So.....i built a new machine. All hardware seems to be in proper working order. Everything is whizzing and whirling as it should.
Then i come about installing Win2K. The initial install and format go great. When it reboots after that, when the boot process comes to the progress bar and Win2K Pro splash page, it EITHER freezes on me OR gives me a KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED blue screen of death! What gives??? Have never seen this. Is this a hardware issue? I double checked all connections, RAM, video card, PSU connections. What could it be? HELPP PLEASEEEE. thanks in advance guys. john Tyan Tiger MPX S2466 Athlon MP 2200 x 2 512 Meg Crucial RAM DDR 2100 Unregistered x 2 Cooler Master Copper Heatsinks x2 Asus GF4 Ti4200 4x AGP card 20 Gig Western Digital ATA 100 120 Gig Western Digital ATA 100 Yamaha CD-RW 44x20x20 Sony Floppy Antec Soho Server Case Windows 2000 Professional Last edited by johnwnguyen; 12-09-2002 at 06:26 AM. |

Hi John
I have seen some people mention that this error could be driver related, sometimes vid card related, so I guess make sure all your drivers are up to date, and your BIOS. If it all installed ok, then try starting in safe mode, this would give the game away with the drivers. Otherwise perhaps it's a RAM problem, any way of checking that? |

Just a guess but I wonder if it has to do with those dual processors. I would go thru the bios again carefully and make sure things are set properly for what hardware I actually was running.

May sound silly but try turning off virus protection in your bios prior to installing your os.

OK I figured it out.
Holy sh*t.....i went through every component in the box and found out that ONE of the heatsinks were on wrong...BLAHHHH....sooo much time wasted.....for those of you building boxes for the 1st time or still fairly beginner, here is a TIP.
Heatsinks can only go on top of the CPU one way, at least most heatsinks are this way. To see what im talking about, look on the bottom of the heatsink. there is a subtle indented strip on one side of the bottom of the heatsink that actually sits on top of the CPU. It usually corresponds to the piece of plastic right next to the flipchip lever, which is a strip pf plastic that says, "SOCKET" IT HAS TO seat properly or it will distribute its weight improperly and can cause damage to your CPU. Hope this will help a desparate soul someday. lemme know. |

thanks john, for letting us know.
I just wanted to mention that Dragonbreath's idea to turn of bios-related virus protection is not silly. this is actually a very good idea for installing any program and especially pertinent to installing os...... |
