ntfs.sys bad on 2 new GW computers

The school bought 14 Gateway E4000 computers about a month ago. These were supposed to be very stable network computers, according to GW.

In the last week, 2 of these computers have refused to boot to Windows because of a problem with the file NTFS.SYS. The comupter will come up to a screen giving about 5 different startup possiblities (safe mode, safe mode with network, etc). It doesn't make any difference which one I pick, it will put the Windows XP logo on-screen for about 1 second, then it restarts again.

If I boot with the XP CD, it won't let me re-install Windows or repair it because of this NTFS.SYS error. Gateway was no help at all on the first machine. I ended up doing a Drive Copy from a good computer to the bad one to get it going again. Now today the same thing has happened with a different machine.

I'm hoping someone else has a better answer than Gateway.


BTW, for the past few years, I've been buying HP Pavillions on Internet auctions to save money for the school. Some of those gave us problems, which I posted to this forum. One forum member (can't remember who) really blasted me for buying a home computer for a network machine and expecting them to work reliably. All I can say right now is that those Pavillions have caused me less problems over the past 2-3 years than these 14 gateways have given me in about one month. There are been at least six times when these computers have lost their network driver. Since they are in a lab that I am not in during the day, those computers can't be used until school is over and I can get in there to re-install the drivers. Currently there is one computer that will not connect to the domain no matter what I try (worked fine for about 3 weeks, then just quit). Now the 2 computers with the NTFS problems. Also, I work at another school that bought one of these models. It worked fine---for 2 days. Then it refused to log on to the network or internet. After hours of working on it, the only thing that would get it going was a new network card to replace the non-working on-board nic.

I doubt if I'll be going back to Pavillions, but Dell is looking like the computer of choice for next year's purchase.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
