Old game leading to high cpu temps
Wasn't sure where to put this thread..
Anyway, I remembered this old game I have that I played on my old Mac, called widget workshop. It's really fun, you can build things out of parts including switches, logic gates, displays, lights, other weird inputs and outputs. It's pretty cool, and I remember having a lot of fun with it when I got it for Xmas when I was in 4th grade or so. Well it works on windows too, so I installed it and was playing around with it, when I noticed my cpu temp was really high. I quit, and it went down 7 degrees. I had been playing quake3 earlier and it hadn't brought my temp up that high. After fooling around with some stress benchmarking programs designed to get the cpu hot, I found that nothing brings the cpu temp up that high as fast as Widget workshop! AND, it brings it up that high even if it is just sitting there in build mode not doing anything! Anyone have any ideas on what it could be doing to bring my cpu temp up so high? I think it's pretty weird. Maybe it's a trait with a lot of old software? It is a win 3.1 game, maybe that has something to do with it? I don't know. Any clues? Just thought it was really odd.

My guess is it forces the use of the "dos" compatibility mode, adding another layer to the os layers already running, that would not be with most any other app. This sounds like a great thing to burn in a system. How big is this file?

One time I installed a dos driver in windows. This put the pc in dos compatability mode until I removed it. Then entire time the system ran 10 degrees over what it had been.
I think Blakhart is right if the game is forcing this situation. Maybe an older machine with win3.1 would be more suitable... I would stop running it until you've figured it out tho. |

The program is very small. Only a few megabytes. That's interesting that dos compatibility mode would make it get so hot. I don't really mind running it, I have a pretty good heatsink, so the temp is still good. I still can't get over how weird it is though.

Actually, it lets you make standalone widgets. Basically it saves your widget as one exe file and they do fit on a floppy. I made a blank one with nothing in it. I put it up here: http://members.cox.net/mikebruno/burnin.rar
