HD Shredder?
I'm fixing to reformat my hd and install a new os onto it, but before I do that I wanted to 'wipe' the whole drive clean of recognizable data. I know one exists, but I'm looking for an app that will make passes across the entire hd with zero's and one's, preferably in dos. Kinda like a paper shredder, but for the hd.
Anybody know what good program like this? |

Fdisk does not write zeros to the drive. It deletes / creates partition information. The data is still there and can be retrieved with some effort. You can go the hd mfg’s site and download a utility that will do that for you. The process does take a while; the last time I did it to a 40 gig drive it took over three hours.

Go to HD site and down load diagnostics/utilities. Practically all have a utility to write zeros.

Make sure you get the latest zeroing utes, they make a world of diff in the time spent. From hours to a half hour or so in my ibm and wd utes. The wd utes are very fast.

Hi,
I use Ranish Partition Manager which is free. I have a WinMe boot disk which has some of the extras removed to make room on the floppy disk. I put Ranish and XOSL onto that floppy. In Ranish, you delete all of the partitions and highligt the now unused area, then press "e" to zero fill the drive. |

Cool, does ranish work on any drive? If so, it is what I have been looking for for a long time.

Yes it works on any hard drive. It has a lot of neat features like being able to create 32 primary partitions, hiding partitions, copying partitions and zero fill....

Hi,
The term Low Level Format is used a lot today in reference to Zero Fill, but they are not really the same thing. Low Level Format is usually done at the factory to setup the drive and mark bad spots so they won't be used. This is something which should not be undone. Zero Fill is used to completely remove any trace of data on the drive by going over it more than once with binary ones and zeros or just zeros. Here is a link on the subject...... http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/di...what.html#what |
