xp slipped a new driver in
i have windows xp pro ,an ati 7000 video card,i had installed the proper updated agp ddr driver.every thing was fine.i then began with the microsoft updates, all of a sudden i got this error,it said it had to do with the ati 7200 display and stopped all downloads.i went into device mgr. and sure enough it showed ati 7200,i used the restore to previous or whatever it said, and every thing went back to normal.did some microsoft update do this ?first time it's happened to me,and this was manifest after a 2hr download on sp1 which it cancelled.

Microsoft is infamous for updating ATI drivers, just when you don't want them.
It messed up on an old Rage II, as well as a Rage XL, and I've never trusted ms updates for ATI video ever since. When doing ANY ms updates, I only install the absolutely necessary ones, and NEVER any driver ones. |

reboot
i should have known,i have never shotgunned my comp. but i had just about talked my wife out of her old hp(she is used to it and hates change)to this real stable amd with xp pro,i built, and i thought i was really cutting the rug by getting all the updates installed.you and others have indicated otherwise but i guess i had to find out the hard way,now i know better and got by with little damage other than time.i do remember one of the downloads was a driver so that was prob. the culprit.thanks and i'll be careful from now on. |
