If I have RAID can i have a HDD, CDRW, DVD-R and DVD Drive?
Ok I have just bought a new motherboard with RAID (Abit KD7-RAID) . Its says in the manual that I shouldn't use the RAID for CD drives etc. My problem is though I have a DVD-R (Pioneer AO3), a DVD drive and I want a faster CDRW. I am running a 120Gb Maxtor HDD. I am using Win XP SP1.
Does anyone know if I can use say the RAID 1 for my HDD and then primrary IDE for my CDRW (as master) and my DVD drive (as slave) and then use scondary IDE for my DVD-R. I don't really know about RAID so any help at all would be great. Also what is the best way of taking a HDD out of one machine with Win XP SP1 and placing it another, it never boots when I try this. Again any help appreciated! Feel free to mail me at BMicklethwaite@msn.com. |

My understanding is that you must have at least two hard drives for using the RAID Controller.

Gold_Disk -- with what you have, RAID is not an option. Morriswindgate is correct -- you need to HDD to make a RAID array work and then to get the most out of the array the HDD should be of equal size and speed. Once you've got those issues delt with you get a whole new set of issues dealing with the IDE controller not being a good fit for a RAID array.

I should have added that you need to get an IDE controller card. With it you add the hard drive to the cards IDE1 and then set the computer to boot from it in the BIOS. THey costs around 25 to 30 bucks. Then you could use the motherboard IDE ports for the CD/DVD drives

The way i understood what he wrote is that he is using 1 HD and just using the raid for a extra ide channel..
if that is still the case the way he mentioned he could do. Zaney123 |

With 2 standard EIDE ports, and 2 RAID ports, that board will handle up to 8 IDE devices...why should he purchase an IDE controller card?
The setup proposed will work fine, as long as you make the changes in BIOS to boot from the RAID. |
