Big problems with a gateway

Hello,

I've been trying to help a friend with his gateway pc. it was crashing a lot and was not very stable so about 6 months ago he went to the gateway store and they told him to upgrade to windows xp, which he then bought from them. He tried to upgrade it by himself but he had some problems and gave up and just put up with the lack of stability and windows me.

fast forward to today. I'm helping him put windows xp on this thing. I wiped out the hard drive and did the fresh install with an upgrade cd trick. it wouldn't stay running for 3 minutes straight after I got it loaded and running in xp. so I called gateway. they said I need to use their proprietary restoration cds to put windows me back on and then upgrade to windows xp. so I did that. got windows me loaded, and I was almost done loading xp. I got to the point just before it takes you to the desktop and it did a file system search and then corrected some incorrect file system stuff or something. after it finished that I rebooted and it did the same thing, and a third time too. so I called gateway and the bastards said it's not their problem and I need to call microsoft. no one answered the phone at microsoft.

I don't know what to do now. all I know is that I hate gateway. if anyone has any idea what I should do now I'd really appreciate it.

the video card driver was the problem. Just needed to get the driver from the internet and install it in safe mode. when he bought windows xp the guy at gateway told him he'd be able to install it and then go on the internet to get the drivers he needed. Needless to say, I would never recommend a gateway to anyone.
