need ac97 codec for recording sound

i have a ecs duron 800, ac97 onboard sound, running windows 98se .
A while ago i did a format and reinstall. Since then i cant record any sound anymore. before it always worked.
When i check 'multimedia" under control panel. the bottom part, for recording , is grayed out, except the drop down box where i choose the device. the correct card is noted in the box. [ac97 audio(wave)] . i was told that drivers are only for playback and that i need the correct codecs to record.
I found this site, and it seems like one of the codecs listed here could be for me, but i really have no idea which one(s) i have to take. can anyone help me out here?
are there any other solutions, would reinstalling the drivers for the card help?
thanks in advance
that link is :

ps. i built the pc myself, i cant remember i ever installed any codecs for my sound card. only the driver, 4in1 driver all the usual microsoft, divx, real, .. . players and a very simple BT848 tv card. (never had any problems with recording from tv before i formatted.

Cool

I have a Epox with onboard AC97 sound. I was using recording capability to record casette tapes to burn to CD using Goldwave.

Have you ran your mobo CD? If the recording Codecs aren't there, then you might try www.goldwave.com

All the drivers for your sound will be on the original CD that came with the motherboard.

thanks for the helping me out people . i reintsalled my audio,
searched around for all interesting things i could install from the cd. and finally i got it to work. all the 'grayed out' is selectable now. i probably did someting wrong during the last install or so.
now i can record again.
BTW that program you pointed me to seems quite nice indeed, Confused, im going to test it tonight.
