XP has problems with kazaa
is there any way except for the compatibilty option, in which you can make kazaa work properly in XP, it doesnt let you type anything anywhere except in kazaas boxes. and the compatibility options dont fix it
can this be solved?

Easily...well, maybe not quite that easily.
Uninstall kazaa. Open regedit, and delete everything referring to kazaa, run RegClean and remove even more kazaa stuff. Run AdAware and remove yet even more kazaa crap. When you're completely satisfied that there is NOTHING to do with kazaa on your computer, get kazaa lite (version 2.0 if possible, 2.2 is lousy), install it, and turn off the XP firewall. |

Get WinMX instead, Kazaa can do all sorts of things to your computer, including changing you TCP/IP settings. That damn program is nothing more than a virus if you ask me and I have spent hours getting it off someones computer and then repairing the damage to the OS.

i tried WinMX, my god that program is horrible, it works like napster, which i hated, i find it really difficult to follow, morpheus was best, shame they messed that one up too.
i did what reboot said, and i installed kazaalite 2, its having no nasty side effects and i found a cool simpsons skin, looks really good.!! ![]()

I know kazaa isn't everyone's fave, but the lite version is at least liveable. WinMX, Bearshare, Napster, Morpheus et al can be totally confusing, as well as downright dangerous (any P2P program has it's pitfalls).
Of them all, kazaa lite still get's my vote as the easiest to use, with the least trouble, but ONLY the lite version, the full Kazaa is a totally disgusting piece of bloated, spying, in-your-face, virus. |

How about having an older rig for kazaa garbage and then a good rig that has no spyware in it?

that may be what i will do when i get some money together and get a 2.8Ghz beast, have this current PC as a testing/downloading/general rubbish computer with an image handy. but there are a couple of things that i wouldnt do that for,
1. I only have a 56k dialup, i wired the socket into the room and i dont fancy ripping it out again or putting another one in, and sharing 56k, joking. when i get ADSL ill get a router, then ill be able to do it properly. 2. I dont really have room for 2 PCs, my house is full of stuff, my computer has to go in the corner of my bedroom cos thats the only space in the house. quite annoying if i am downloading something i want thats big(not that big, but anything is big with 56k!) like the XP SP1, last time i had to leave my PC on all night, its not noisy, but when everything is silent, even my clock is noisy ![]() oh yeah, and the nice thing i found with kazaalite is, with kazaa the errors it causes are with your machine, but the errors caused with kazaalite are kazaalite, a quick exit and re-open and im away again

My daughter is talking about Kazaa, and doesn't believe me when I tell her it is spywear, virus infested crap. Is it the consenses of the group that kazaalite is an acceptable program. In short, how does she get the benefits without the garbage? I don't really like the idea of her trashing her own system. Infecting my entire network is just unacceptable.

The people who make kazaa realized that just about everyone hated the program, but loved what it did.
Enough threats of abandoning it, and going with something else, they decided to release kazaa lite. Sure, there are not quite as many features, but you get NO spyware, NO ads, and far less crashing on those systems that seem to crash a lot anyhow. After testing, an installation of kazaa put so many freaky components in the strangest of places, and anti-spy programs simply killed it's functionality. It couldn't live without it's spyware components, nor it's ads. Once removed, by using ad-aware, and a few other ones, as well as some manual registry diving, msconfig, etc., then kazaa lite installed, everything worked as it should. Kazaa lite may be the easiest to use, and the least intrusive of all the P2P programs around...so...if ya just gotta use one of these, kazaa lite is the choice of the moment anyhow. |

I like Winmx but can never get anything, always in cue. Kazaa Lite seems to work much better.

I don't think Kazaalite is put out by the makers of Kazaa. I have read where the Kazaa people were trying to pursue the guys that stripped the program of their spyware. The motivation of the Kazaa people was to gather marketing information by giving away a peer to peer downloading program. Who ever relesed the Kazaalite version was going around Kazzaa's copyrights. It seems like a legal nightmare but like I said it's just what I've read.

yea, kazaalite was actually made by this scottish guy, he has nothing to do with kazaa, and im sure they hate him.
as a long time kazaa user, i hated the fact that it would always mess up, i did have a kazaa crack where you didnt have to have the spyware, it put a dummy dll in and didnt come up with ads or anything, but i cant find it now, anyway, kazaalite seems much more stable aswell. im converted.! |

OK, I wasn't aware of the kazaa/lite battle over copyright. Running lite, it always want's to upgrade every time you start it, thus the assumption that it was from the same people.
To give you an idea how much I hate the full kazaa, here's my personal "Two thumbs up" to the guy that gave us kazaalite! |

I agree with you reboot. Normally I wouldn't be a fan of someone messing with someone else's creation. But since the makers of Kazaa have tried to pull the wool over the eyes of it's users and the guy in Scotland(?) isn't trying to profit I think it's funny. I don't use any of the peer to peer programs but my kids do and I have spent my fair share time straightening out the problems that those types of programs have created.
I still am sorta unsure about the whole sharing thing. I recently decided to learn about photo editing and I ordered a copy of Photoshop 7.0. When it arrived my junior high age daughter had several friends over that were spending the night. Everyone of them couldn't believe I bought it because it was available on the "net' for free. When I explained to them the obvious reasons why you should buy your software I could tell it fell on deaf ears. As a result I am not sure about leaving any of those applications on my kids computer. I keep good track of what they download and they aren't allowed to download software. But the underlying principles bother me. |

As much a fan of free software as I am, I still believe there's a free alternative for most stuff out there. What you can't get free, you can usually find shareware, or get a copy with some hardware you buy.
The legalities of software piracy are not an issue for discussion here, but if you look deep enough, you can find some exceptional free programs that do the same (and sometimes more) than some costing serious money. I'd like you tell me the difference between downloading a copyrighted program/game or a copyrighted picture or video... Now what about your rules for your kids? Anyhow...you get what you pay for, and if you don't pay, you're far more likely to get a virus/trojan or something you didn't plan on. Anyone can rename a file, so Barney's Christmas Carol.mp3 could turn out to be Debbie Does Dallas.mpg and you'd have no way of knowing, while WMP will simply play it in all it's glory with one click. |

yea, i use it mostly for getting rare/hidden music from bands i like
also, i read somewhere that if you have absolutely no intention of buying the music/software/whatever in question, you arent ripping the developers out of your money, so its technically not as bad as if you were seeing if it was there for free before buying it. i know its wrong and all to download stuff free when you should buy it. but its also handy for stuff like at the moment, im downloading the XP service pack 1, because im sick of having to leave my PC on overnight to download it every time i reinstall windows, i found it on kazaa and it also means that i can stagger my download of it to suit my 'on time'.
