memory usage in xp
I have a gig of memory and xp isn't using a fraction of it. To put it to the test whether xp would use even half of it, I started a 3-D rendering application and two of the newest games around in addition to windows media player and many different web pages and a few misc applications, but windows was still only using 300mb of memory. Look at it. The thing is that I could still play either game with all that running. I turned off page file before, but windows didn't like it.
What can I do to get windows to use the memory aggressively? I used to know a reg setting to change, but I've forgottent it.

the only way for memory to get used up is to run multiple apps, games, etc. if you have 1 gig that'll take a lot of apps, bc 1 gig is quite a lot of RAM! RAM has run out on me before (i only hav 256).
if you really wanna run out of ram: open multiple spreadsheets in excel, and enter "=RAND()" in A1. then copy it into every cell in the spread sheet, and hit F9 (or whatever the refresh key is) repeatedly. ![]() i wouldnt recommend this tho,

It actually really surprised me that I was able to run two different video games that require alot of memory and processor power. Wow. Perhaps, I protest too much. It's only a 1.6gig p4 processor with 400fsb with rambus memory. I can't wait until I 'm able to get my 2.4 gig 533 processor to work.

I paid alot of money for those extra rambus sticks, I guess I didn't need them.

i have 384MB or RAMBUS and i havent run out of memory yet in XP.. but then again i never play 2 video games at the same time..
also the RAMBUS runs faster then DDR does.. it mhz speed is much faster...

I was hoping that it would help in my rendering.

512 is probably overkill for most people but I still think every PC running XP needs about that much. Most of the time 256 is probably enough but there are times more will speed your computer up. Your software has to be capable of using that much RAM and has to have a need as well. I know my workstation with 1gig of RAM and AutoCAD 2002 sometimes could use even more. But not often.
