"windows cannot start system32\drivers\ntfs.sys"

My friend had this problem shortly after formatting a hard disk and installing win xp. he was playing a game and the comp shut off and restared and the error message in the title came up.

Any idea what it's all about?

I'm leaning towards the error being the actual motherboard. Here's what's been going on. I installed a new chip into a motherboard. Hard disk would format but wouldn't let win xp install all the way on it. Got that blue screen when installing. So..We switched to another smaller older hard drive. It formatted fine, Win xp installed fine. However this time, there were weird colored lines and blocks on screen at boot, and only a few lines of text of the post would actually come on screen and you'd have to reboot, and then it would be fine. Colors would also pop up on the other setup with the other hard drive installed, but these would be full screen blinking patterns that could only be taken care of if you restarted.

Anyone know what the deal is?

Not sure this will help ya.

I had the same thing happen to me yesterday. My pc would just keep rebooting it's self and givin me all kinds of error messages I've never seen before.
Thinking it was a virus I tried scanning and nothing found
Well what the heck ?
Reformat time and start all over..
Do that,Format goes fine Try to install xp home Not happening. errrr.
strip pc down to bare bones. m/b ,1 harddrive, video card "2 sticks ddr".
Notta xp gets almost installed stops I'm gettin mad by now lol

Pull out 1 stick ddr Samething errrrr really mad now LOL

replace the last stick of memory with the 1 i'll pulled out before and all goes well
up and running a 1/2 hour later
Conclusion for me was 1 of my crucial memory went out I guess..

you might consider that a poss??
