Well I get into windows at record speed (win xp pro). But then it just hangs there for about 30 seconds before I can open any programs or log online. During that 30 seconds my virus scan is disabled and my startup programs don't load. After that first initian 30 seconds sitting at the desktop everything loads up (start menu items, startup proggies).
Anyway I'm sure it's something with the network. Since if I remove my network card from the comp it boots up in record speed and there is no 30 second wait period. Does anyone know what is happening? Or how I can disable the 30 second timer? Thanks |

Are you running Norton Personal Firewall by any chance? I know when I had that running with Norton Antivirus (both 2002) I would get the same thing. I uninstalled the firewall in favor of Windows XP's couple with the firewall included in a router and don't have that problem anymore.

I'm running zone alarm but it doens't start until it's past the 30 seconds of no activity.
So maybe it's the windows firewall? |

Try running MSCONFIG "Selective Startup" and only run with the minimal programs.
Try disabling your XP Firewall aswell. |

Tried the selective startup and it still persisted.
It seems windows firewall was never enabled (Connection Properties?) So now I'm even more clueless as to what is causing this holdup. |

Do a Start, Run and enter MSconfig and select Startup tab. Let us know what is starting. Much of the stuff can probably be removed from startup.

No the problem is that the items in the startup tab don't start until AFTER the initial 30 seconds of inactivity. So I'm 100% sure it's not them causing the problem.
It just sits at the desktop for 30 seconds with no disk activity or processor activity. Then after 30 seconds or so it loads everything. |

My computer does the same thing. It started pretty much right after XP was installed, before I had any programs or drivers installed. Sounds like the same problem you are having, Abor.
I have XP Home Edition. So far, I've just been living with it. It would be great if there is a way to fix this.

Abor...What kind of network card do you have? Is it the same as mine? Configuration problem maybe? |

Have you tried running Bootvis? I had a similar problem on a new build that I had been living with. According to Bootvis I had a 40 second Disk I/O delay. Just google for Bootvis and you can find it at Microsoft.
My problem was in Device Manager/IDE Controller. I only have one hd on IDE primary channel and one cdrw on IDE secondary channel. Somehow the box for device 1 on both channels was set to AUTO. Changed those to NONE and my problem went away. The puter found device 0 but kept looking for non-existent device 1. You could possibly have a similar problem. Make sure you don't have a non-existtent nic in device manager. Ichabod |

Yeah I ran bootvis. It validated my statement about taking 30 seconds to do anything. There was a huge gap between the processes where nothing was loaded and the computer was idle. I ran the bootvis optimizer and it took about 10 seconds off the wait time. Now that gap is a lot less, wondering if I can run it multiple times to make it even faster?
![]() Or is there any other reasons why it might be taking so long? Last edited by Abor; 12-16-2002 at 08:33 PM. |
