Display settings only 16 & 32 bit

I was looking to set my color settings to 256 for a graphics project I am working on (to check dithering), but I only found 16 and 32 bit available. Is this a WinXP thing, or is it because of NVidia?
I found I could reset it to 256 for a game, or reset it by going to Settings>Advanced>Adapter>List all modes. But that is too much hassle. I did update the Nvidia GForce2 MX driver, but still don't see anything that would help.
Is 256 a non option now? Or do I need to uninstall-reinstall the driver instead?
Thanks for any ideas.
Kathy
