You can use fdisk or you can use the XP CD. XP will format the HDD for you.

Get into your BIOS, change it to boot from CD.
Insert your XP CD, it will boot to install. Then format and partition from the installer, much easier. |

Hi achilipepper,
Compaq? I think you may run into a few problems if you try to format the hard drive and install WinXP fresh. You might have to use the Compaq restore CD first and then upgrade to WinXP. Cricket

You might to booting with a boot disk and looking to see if there is another partition on your drive that is hidden from Windows. Some Compaqs have bios info on the hard drive. Others have a diagnostic partition that is safe to delete, You just have to run the diagnostics from the CD after that. You should go to Compaq's site and see if they have drivers for XP for all of your hardware. If they do it's a pretty good that you can upgrade to XP.
