Upgrading from 98 to 2000 pro had some issues with a couple drivers. Downloaded and executed wrong chipset drivers. Now the comp goes thru start up and keeps rebooting itself. I have the right drivers on cd-rom. Am I screwed. How can I get them changed back??
Please help I have tons of valuable info on that drive and I only backed some of it up. Please help oh wise ones. |

You can always put the drive into another computer and copy your valuables over to it before beginning just to be safe.
It depends on which chipset you have and if you are using NTFS or FAT32. But one way or another you ought to be able to boot from the CD or a floppy and go from there. Post back with more details about system's hardware and the file sytem you are using. Also are you booting from the mobo or a controller card. |

In the bios there (push F2 or Delete) is an option for boot order. Select CDRom or the letter that corresponds with it. The first screen you see should tell you how to get into the bios if not your mobo manual will.

You could try it but then you couldn't change your drivers. You may have another problem if you can't get it to boot from a CD. Does it complete posting before it reboots itself?

Looks like it might be time to reinstall over the top of its self. Back up your data if you can. Don't chose to format and it should still be there, but just in case back it up!

Hi badfishx2,
What are your system specs? I understand Win2000 and WinXP are a little more fussy about the RAM used in a system than Win98 is. Do you have access to different sticks you can swap in to test with? Cricket

ok i installed a fresh version of win 2k pro on another partition and it boots fine,
is there a way to migrate the other stuff (programs) and make them show up on my desktop. I'd like to remove the bad install. |

You can uninstall them from ADD/REMOVE. But if you really want to do a whipe out, you will have to format the drive.

Your best bet is to back up your data and start all over. You can't copy most programs over anyway. They will need to be installed.

You probably can but since you are able to boot up and back up that's what I would do. You are going to have so many Windows installs you are bound to have problems down the road. Besides wasting a significant portion of your drive.
