Going from 98SE to XP home
We just built a new machine for a friend with an XP1700 on an Epox board. He wanted 98SE loaded. We loaded 98 with all the necessary mobo drivers, etc. We partitioned the hhd with one 40gb partition and two 20gb partitions.
Now he bought XP Home and would like us to load that instead of 98. No problem. But what's the best way to go about it now? Should I delete all the partitions (Fat32) and let XP partition and format the drive with NTFS? IOW, should I just start over with a blank hhd? We're in no big hurry, so time is not an issue.

When you go into the XP setup, you can delete the partitions and re-create them however you wish. It will then continue and ask what file format that you want to format the drive in.

If there's a bunch of personal stuff on the HD you want to keep, an upgrade will work well enough. Let the install run it's compatibility checks, and take note of the log. Such things as EZCD4 won't upgrade, and you'll have to BUY EZCD5 if you want to keep it. (Gee, thanks Roxio...NOT!)
If the HD is basically fresh, and nothing has been added that can't be replaced, then go for a fresh install. Pop in the CD, boot to it, and go for the fdisk/format option(s). NTFS for security on a multiple user system, FAT32 if you have any suspicions that it may crash (user error) and you need to recover it with a floppy of any sort. I personally use NTFS on my partitions, and FAT32 on the wife's, mostly because she can crash XP like nobody I have ever seen, and I'm an old school type that still does things in DOS. The epitomy of "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing".

Jim,
We've only got the 98 OS and mobo drivers installed at this point, so I think I'll just do the fresh install thingy. |

One more thing,
After XP is installed, do I have to install the 4 in 1 drivers from the Epox CD, or does XP have it's own? The board is the Epox 8K3AE. The driver choices on the CD are: Service Pack 4 in 1 driver (4.37) AC '97 Sound Driver USB Driver IDE Bus Master 3.01.4 WIN2000(For Performance only) |
