A friend of mine was having problems with Windows Update and Microsoft support people had him convert his fat32 system to NTFS. Now that he has NTFS, his sound card, modem, scanner, and other hardware have quit working and are no longer recognized by windows.

That sounds strange. Changing the file system shouldn't affect hardware.
Has he tried deleting the misbehaving peripherals from Device Manager, rebooting, and letting Windows redetect everything? |

He has tried to reload it through Add Hardware and is greeted with a "cannot start code 10"

Changing FAT to NTFS doesn't affect hardware. I bet it's a Windows error. They usually don't happen, but they can, and sounds that in your case it happened.
If nothing helps a clean re-install of Windows will cure it. RJ

Does this mean he did a clean re-install of Windows and it didn't help ?

No, not yet. The only thing he did do, is reload SP1, and that got the modem working again.

As questioned in previous post, did he delete everything in device manager and let XP find and reinstall it?

I have not advised him to do this yet because I'm not sure if he has the software to reload it.

Is there any chance the NTFS permissions got botched and locked him out of areas where the driver files are stored? Make sure the system has security access to the whole drive.

Double Click My Computer. Right click on C-drive, select properties. Go to Security tab, make sure "System" is in the group, and that "full control" is checked.
If it's not there, click Add, then type "system" and give it full control. |

Does it matter that this is the "XP Home" version?

I don't think so, but I don't have any experience with the Home version of XP.
You might have to turn off the "simple file sharing" option to see what is going on. Go to My Computer, then click on Tools then Folder Options then on the View tab, then scroll to the bottom and uncheck the Simple File sharing (recommended) box. I don't know if it's even possible for the system files to be locked out with simple file sharing enabled. |
