A Windows too far
My daughter just called with a computer problem.
They took a machine that I have described as "an old Compaq" and loaded Windows 2000 on it. I don't have an exact system description but I think it's something like a 166 or a 200. They said it runs real slow and it won't recognize the modem. This does not surprise me, as it probably only has 32mb memory. They have a Windows 98 CD available. Is there a way to do a "downgrade" of the operating system, or is the choice to format the drive and start over with the Win98 CD? ---->>> Pat |

I believe if they did a win2000 upgrade and choose yes to save old configuration then under add remove programs in ControlPanel they should be able to uninstall win2000.

Since (and if, taking it from ktkendall) they did an upgrade like that on an old machine, I would think they probably saved the old configuration, since it is "recommended".

. . . and, just in case the didn't choose to save the old configuration . . .
If all the hardware is the same as it originally shipped with, they can run the Compaq Recovery Disk set, which will wipe the drive and reinstall whatever OS came with it originally. They will lose all data added since they bought the machine, as well as need to reinstall any programs added since then. Not a wonderful option, but an option none-the-less. Hope they said "yes" to saving the old configuration, or have good backups. Best of Luck, and Happy Holidays . . . Gary |

I will be talking to them in the morning to find out. I hope they did the 'save configuration'. But since they didn't try to figure out if the upgrade was a good idea, I don't know. I suspect it's a small hard drive too.
I will post the results. |
