Windows 98 reboots on shutdown

I have a windows 98SE machine that reboots on shutdown.

The machine is an old Gateway that probally ceam with the original Windows 95, as the manufacture date is 08/05/96. It is an old AT machine and I can turn it off with the power switch at any time.

The BIOS is an 1994 Pheonix and does not have power management. The settings in Windows power settings are all set to power down.

I'm not sure if it has the patch from Microsoft, as I'm not sure how to check.

Any help is appreciated.

There are a few patches out for shut down issues with Windows 98. Norton had huge problems with 98 and caused big shut down issues. Active desktop causes huge issues. The biggest shut down problem is simply not shutting down, but hanging as it tries to shut down as it can't close everything fast enough so the shut down process hangs. I have heard of the reboot issue, as well.

Here's an MS link for a shut down patch...

Success!!

Thanks for all the help!

I found my old Windows 98 norton Rescue Disk set, booted the system with disk #1 in, then followed the prompts to scan for and repair virus infections. It found the NYB virus in the boot sector, fixed it and the two files it found with the same virus.

I pulled out the last disk, rebooted into Windows and shut down ......It shut down just fine.

Disabling "fast shutdown" in msconfig>advanced will usually stop a spontaneous rebooting at shudown.

Thanks Eshort - it was disabled - was one of the first things I checked.

See my previous post - it is working fine now - but slooooow (I'm used to my 1800+ Athlon XP)

Thanks for the input.
