Can I upgrade Win 98 with XP home OEM version
I bought a Win XP Home OEM version to upgrade my Win98 system. When I went to install it, there was only one option available: "new installation." "Upgrade" was not available. It appears that the new installation will delete all applications, my documents folder, etc.
Is there any way to work around this, or am I stuck with either returning the OS (good luck) or a complete new re-install of all software (it ain't worth the trouble)? Last edited by wbracey; 12-26-2002 at 05:53 PM. |

i think it would be worth the trouble to re-install since xp is much better than 98. the decision is up to you though. it runs better with a fresh install.
i dont know a work-around though someone else might though Zaney123 Last edited by ZANEY123; 12-26-2002 at 05:36 PM. |

It is well worth the trouble to do a clean install plus all the space you will save by doing so. Your apps will likely run better as well.

THe Idea of upgrading from the 98 based operating system to XP, to me is nothing more than a dream, that is if you want things to work right> About the only way is to do a clean install.
If you have more than one hard drive or your hard drive has a seperate partition on it, just save the important stuff to it by copy/paste. If you don't have this but do have a cd-rw the burn these files to a disk. If you do not have a second hard drive or you hard drive does not have a second partition on it, this is the perfect time to do it. |

A clean install is well worth the extra effort. I did the upgrade the first time. The second time I did the clean install. Everything works as it should.

Back to his original question. Is it possible to do a upgrade using a OEM copy of XP. I don't think so, but for my own knowledge would like to know for sure. I agree a fresh install is best, but I am curious if a upgrade is even possible.

No you can't upgrade from an OEM copy, or not from the ones I have seen. You need an upgrade copy or full retail version to perform an upgrade. But since an upgrade license is about $100 less than a full license it would make little sense to use a full version license to perform an upgrade.
