Question Outlook 2000 stripping EXE attachments

Hi,
I guess after one of the latest MS updates, Outlook 2000 is all of a sudden stripping out .exe attachments. Is there a way to turn this off?
TIA

Tools/ Options/ Security

Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus.

Uncheck the box.

In practise OE regards /all/ attachments as potential viruses unless you
uncheck the box.

this is express or regular outlook?

Hi Zaney 123,
It is Outlook 2000, regular outlook. I don't see any box in Security that you describe. I did see this in help:
Quote:
There are two levels of attachment security. Access to level 1 files is blocked and can't be changed. When you receive an attachment with a level 2 file type, you will be prompted to save the file to your hard disk. If you use Microsoft Exchange Server, your administrator can add and remove file types for both levels of e-mail security. If a file type is added to both levels, it will be treated as a level 1 file type.
of course .exe is level 1. They've got a lot of nerve blocking my emails!

If you have upgraded to Office to SP3 you can alter the security level to allow attachments back to the way it was before SP1.

There are several ways to do it. Most of them are listed here.

If you have any questions about them post back. Most of them are self explanatory.

Thumbs up

Thanks Tuf, great info. That's exactly what I was trying to do. I guess that is what I get for getting all the latest updates. Hey Zaney 123, I appreciate the effort.

Anytime! The updates are worth doing, IMHO. Thats the only part that is annoying. M$ can't win for losing this battle. They get a bad rap for having a very powerful program (Outlook) so they remove some power to make the skeptics happy. But we want the power to do what we want back!

Well put. You're right the updates are worth doing and MS is caught between a rock and a hard place. However I think they should put an advanced users place on their website and include work arounds for those who want them, not just arbitrarily making changes that put everybody at the novice level. They could have info and work arounds like the website you directed me to. A lot of people knock MS and sure they could do some things better, but they are a prime target for trouble makers because of their installed user base. If Redhat and Apple had the users MS had they would have the same security issues. If a hacker is going to go to the trouble of attacking an OS, is he going to go after a OS with a few million users or one with 10's of millions of users?

I agree that should make it easier. The info is on their website but isn't easy to find and it is a little cryptic. Of course I will never understand the mentality of some one that writes malicious code. Outlook has one function, to help you get more done in less time. So those virus' that target Outlook itself are really aimed at working people. That makes absolutely no sense to me. In essence they are targeting the people that it make it possible for them to have the time and the means to be destructive.
