weird Win98SE shutdown scenario
This may help fellow cyberbuddies with the infamous Win98SE shutdown issues...
I was playing around with various display settings on three of my computs: 2 desktops/1 notebook. After "playing around" and resetting all the original settings, I lost the windoze shutdown (ie- would freeze at the "now its ok to shutdown your computer" screen. Went into "system">"automatic power managment" setting and disabled it in "properties". Windows then would shutdown properly! Returned to "system">"automatic shutdown" and re-enabled it....guess what------windows shutsdown fine!! What's happening, I have no idea..but..it seems to have "fixed" whatever was faulty in the shutdown sequence! Interestingly, the desktop shutdown problem began after I hooked another monitor on the box...when hooked original monitor back, shutdown would freeze...even with all original display and adapter settings returned... |

Hi eshort,
Exactly where can this "automatic power managment" be found? I looked in Start> Settings> Control Panel> System and checked all the tabs and can't find anything like that. I even looked in Power Management...nothing. Is it in the BIOS/CMOS settings? Cricket

I found it under system devices section of system page...
But--found it only on one of my 5 computers??!! My "other 4" computers are showing the white lettered message (at top of screen) "its OK to shut down conmputer.." after hitting shutdown tab. These machines worked fine immediatel;y following Win98se installation--but--shutdown prob began after I fiddled with the display settings and/or changed the monitor..even after setting all values back to default! These R old machines (P75-133), so im stuck with Win95/98 (dont want to go the Linux route just yet). |
