What is the process alg.exe doing?

Can anyone tell me what alg.exe does and should I be letting it do it?

I understand that its the Microsoft Application Layer Gateway servicebut not what it does

It is listed in Windows Task Manager in my processes. I know what everything else is doing except this one. It is shown as a local service (whatever that means)

Thanks
Bobdog
